Leader or Follower: What will you be?
Posted by on Monday, February 27, 2006 (EST)

You must choose your position in a Canine Relationship, Leader or Follower.  If you do not choose, your dog will.  This choice is most easily made when your dog comes into your home.  If there is a window of opportunity your dog will challenge for the Leader position.  This behavior may be shown as something as simple as: begging for unearned treats, nudging for petting, climbing on furniture, sleeping in beds, barging through doors, persistent attention seeking.  These are the behaviors that are tolerated and may not seem serious but if they are in your dog's perspective, your dog may resort to using its teeth.

Leadership:  Humans are Leaders......Dogs must be Followers

To help your dog become a Good Follower, take on these characteristics and actions of a Leader.

  •  Leaders are calm, confident and consistent:  Assert authority with conviction.
  •  Leaders are pro-active and in charge of every situation: Set boundaries, rules and limitations.
  •  Leaders will not allow canine teeth on human skin: Prohibit mouthing and play biting.
  •  Leaders control space: A dog must Yield the space to the human by moving out of the way.
  •  Leaders understand the dog does not own people, toys, furniture or food: Own everything in your house.
  •  Leaders provide a safe place to rest: Designate an area or rug but preferably a crate.
  •  Leaders maintain good order and discipline in a multi-dog home: No favorites - a separate relationship with each dog.
  •  Leaders provide the dog a job of action or waiting: Moving, staying or contained is determined by command.

Dogs find Balance by Following the Leader. Fulfill his Body, Mind and Heart by giving him Exercise, Discipline and Affection.
